چکیده

Recent advances in computation technology for simulation/uncertainty analyses have shed new light on the triangular distribution and its use to describe the uncertainty of bounded input phenomena. Herein, we develop a novel fitting procedure for a continuous unimodal (four-parameter) family of distributions on a bounded domain, utilizing three properly selected quantile estimates and an estimate of the most likely value. The family in question is the two-sided power (TSP) family of which the triangular distribution is a member. We analyze some of the procedure's fitting characteristics and use them to estimate the waiting time distribution in a stationary M/G/1 queuing system and the completion time distribution of a small project network example taken from the shipbuilding domain.

M ay 2 00 8 On the elicitation of continuous , symmetric , unimodal distributions

In this brief note, we highlight some difficulties that can arise when fitting a continuous, symmetric, unimodal distribution to a set of expert’s judgements. A simple analysis shows it is possible to fit a Cauchy distribution to an expert’s beliefs when their beliefs actually follow a normal distribution. This example stresses the need for careful distribution fitting and for feedback to the e...

On discrete a-unimodal and a-monotone distributions

Unimodality is one of the building structures of distributions that like skewness, kurtosis and symmetry is visible in the shape of a function. Comparing two different distributions, can be a very difficult task. But if both the distributions are of the same types, for example both are unimodal, for comparison we may just compare the modes, dispersions and skewness. So, the concept of unimodali...

A Novel Qualitative State Observer

The state estimation of a quantized system (Q.S.) is a challenging problem for designing feedback control and model-based fault diagnosis algorithms. The core of a Q.S. is a continuous variable system whose inputs and outputs are represented by their corresponding quantized values. This paper concerns with state estimation of a Q.S. by a qualitative observer. The presented observer in this pape...

A continuous approximation fitting to the discrete distributions using ODE

The probability density functions fitting to the discrete probability functions has always been needed, and very important. This paper is fitting the continuous curves which are probability density functions to the binomial probability functions, negative binomial geometrics, poisson and hypergeometric. The main key in these fittings is the use of the derivative concept and common differential ...

Human Judgment is Heavy Tailed: Empirical Evidence and Implications for the Aggregation of Estimates and Forecasts

How frequent are large disagreements in human judgment? The substantial literature relating to expert assessments of real-valued quantities and their aggregation almost universally assumes that errors follow a jointly normal distribution. We investigate this question empirically using 17 datasets that include over 20,000 estimates and forecasts. We find incontrovertible evidence for excess kurt...
